RedSpider team members have been responsible for the development and
management of large, functional GISs:
- Iwokrama International Centre GIS
Coverage: Iwokrama Forest, 3,700 sq. km
- Guyana Environmental Protection Agency GIS.
Coverage: Guyana, 216,000 sq. km
- Guyana Forestry Commission GIS

Map: Archaeology of the Iwokrama Forest (Source: Iwokrama) |
The first GIS in Guyana was established in 1995. It provided
planning and other services for 3,700 sq. kilometres of unspoilt rain
forest with datasets on flora, fauna, drainage, topography, archaeology,
etc. to staff scientists and visiting researchers of this Commonwealth
institution.
Training was provided to staff and students of the University
of Guyana. Satellite technology was tested/ applied to remote sensing
of rainforests and a new valuable dataset (Flooding in the Iwokrama Forest),
was developed in collaboration with researchers from NASA
JPL
and USDA
FS IITF .
The Iwokrama
GIS
continues to operate.
Case Study: The GFC Forest
Resource Information System
In 2001, at the request of the Commissioner of Forests,
the GIS operations of the Guyana Forestry Commission were evaluated and
recommendations made for making them an effective part of the organisation.
In early 2002 the recommendations were further implemented, and a formal
GIS Unit, the GFC Forest Resource Information System, was established
and staffed.
A strategic approach, operating protocol and suggested
work plan for operation of the Unit was prepared, and the staff were orientated
in their new operations. The GFC GIS now provide services to GFC
staff, other government agencies and forestry sector stakeholders.

the Feb 2005 Flood, and which now remains as some documentation
of the event. |

A GIS is an information system
- built on databases that work directly with the 'where' component
of data. Such spatial systems can more naturally replicate the real,
spatial world - censuses, medical epidemics, natural disasters,
town planning, forest management, criminology, etc. - with powerful
results. |

The GIS Team
RedSpider.biz offers a team of specialists with over 20 years of
combined experience, each of whom has built and managed Geographic
Information Systems, and trained personnel to use such systems.
The principal, Vijay Datadin, has a MSc in GIS (Edin. 1999).

Sample GIS Application
Pre-Harvest
Stock Maps can be produced from forest inventory data; with stream
buffers, logging trails, species and DBH classes, species summary
and calculation of net operable area of logging blocks.
High quality maps can be produced in large formats,
up to 30" wide, at a reasonable cost. The information and maps
are suitable for Forest Management Plans that satisfy the GFC Code
of Practice for sustainable forest utilisation. |
